ARTISTS:
(Chin Baung) Eh Nay Htoo is a Karen artist attending Furness High School. He loves the Roselle leaf fried and in country style soup.
(Peh Gay Lay portrait) Shira Walinsky is an artist and teacher living in Philly. She has worked with the Karen community since 2012 with the Southeast By Southeast project.
About the Seed:
Roselle is grown in Southeast Asia during monsoon season. The Karen people of Burma love this plant and call it Besidoh or Chin Baung. Many Karen refugees (including Naw Doh, Hser Ku, Shwe Chit, and Wah Paw) and farm manager Clara Varadi-True work at Novick Farm in South Philly: "We use every part of the plant, and especially the leaves for frying and soup. We cook the fruit and make jelly. It's good for your health!"
